La Vall d'en Bas
|
The municipality of la Vall d’en Bas is a first-class geographical and landscape unit. Ranges and cliff-faces such as like those of Cabrera, Llancers, Freixeneda or Puigsacalm all surround meadows and forests of beech, holms and oaks to the Bas plain. A plain with some of the most fertile soils in Catalonia. With well-cultivated crops, such as maize, barley, oats or potatoes. A flurry of streams and rivulets flow across the plain, pouring their waters into de Fluvià after it has come to be after passing the Falgars peaks.
La Vall has an area of 90.5 km2 and is about 500 metres above sea level. The Puigsacalm and the Santa Magdalena massif form one of the most obvious silhouettes of the surrounding areas. From its summits, with a top height of 1,515 metres, you can enjoy fabulous panoramic views over much of Catalonia. The municipality of la Vall d’en Bas was created in 1968 by the merge of the former municipalities of Sant Esteve d’en Bas, Sant Privat d’en Bas, Joanetes and La Pinya. With the merger, the regained part of the structure of the former viscounties of Bas, and it became one of the largest municipalities in the county. The concentration of farmland among the peasants of La Vall -parcel concentration- (the only current example in Catalonia) and the creation of the farmers’ cooperatives in the early 1970s gave a significant boost to farming activity in this area and gave rise to the current road network, which connects the various villages and neighbourhoods. Many Romanesque chapels are part of the landscape and culture of La Vall, such as those of Sant Joan dels Balbs, Sant Quintí, Sant Mateu, Sant Xemplí, Santa Magdalena del Mont or the church of Sant Esteve d’en Bas or Sant Romà de Joanetes. However, it is worth mentioning rural landscape architecture such as Massagur, La Corominola, La Torre de la Clapera, La Cau, La Dou, El Tarrús and El Serrat, among others. La Vall d’en Bas has been the land of remensa peasants, and the Verntallat farmhouse, where the famous peasant’s chief was born, is still preserved. It is also relevant to mention two town centres catalogued as historical-artistic in nature; the town of El Mallol, based on the area’s highest hill and which for centuries was the administrative capital of the Bas viscounty, and the centre of Els Hostalets d’en Bas, which has its origins precisely in the hostels located at the foot of the old trail that went from Olot to Vic. Painters and photographers have portrayed the typical wooden balconies, filled with hundreds of geraniums giving them a remarkable visual impact. In short, a set of places with undeniable interest, where the friendly and hospitable treatment of its people will make your stay enjoyable and enriching. |
